Brad Davis is putting together a solid OL class. Got a Top 100 level OT today in Tyree Adams. And everyone I've talked w/ likes Paul Mubenga out of Georgia. Soccer player turned OL prospect. With 5-star Zalance Heard still available, and OOS targets, Tigers are sitting pretty.

is that still a thing in 2023?

because we can finally take a full class again next year.

There are 2 things that get confused. One was the extra signers last year you could add (up to 7) for players lost to the portal.

This year, the NCAA voted to remove the annual 25 player limit but that the 85 players under scholarship is a hard limit.

From what I read, this is currently only for 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes. However, it is believed that the 25 annual scholarship limit will be removed permanently by the NCAA at some point.

The 25 limit rule was put in place when Houston Nutt was at Ole Miss and would sign like 35 players per class and there was a hoopala surrounding "oversigning".

Schools like Tennessee got hosed when their coach was fired. Players playing for Pruitt could leave without penalty and way more left than could be replenished by 25 new bodies. It was like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

As long as you don't exceed the 85 scholarship cap, you can sign as many players as you want.

The art/science behind that for schools will be looking at the respective recruiting pools for each year to gauge how many you want to fill this year vs next, etc.,.

We've seen that in some years, the available talent graduating from Louisiana high schools is much heavier than others. Same for other states. The covid lockdown years might also be a bit of a wild card in that some classes will not have had the one on one coaching and game experience that "normal" years provide.

At the end of the day, I am thankful Polian is managing that.

Baton Rouge (La.) Woodlawn four-star quarterback Rickie Collins has decommitted from Purdue, announcing the news Monday night.

Collins is the No. 173 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

With his decommitment, Collins becomes the top uncommitted quarterback in the class.

Sports Illustrated has released its initial Top-25 class recruiting rankings for the 2023 cycle with the LSU Tigers making the cut.

Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas and Georgia rounded out the Top-5 with LSU coming in at No. 14.

Here’s what Sports Illustrated had to say of the 2023 recruiting class the Tigers have put together after a dominant stretch on the recruiting trail in July:

“Another program still hunting for a future QB1, the Tigers still wound up as one of the summer’s biggest winners in pulling in a dozen new commitments since June began. None felt bigger on offense than wide receiver Jalen Brown, one of the nation’s fastest players at any position. Defensively, the pass-rushing unit has seen recent upgrades in Dashawn Womack and Jaxon Howard, two out-of-region wins for Brian Kelly at his new post. Better production closer to Baton Rouge, and the Tigers could be looking at an eventual top-10 group.”

  1. Alabama
  2. Ohio State
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Texas
  5. Georgia
  6. Clemson
  7. Oklahoma
  8. Miami
  9. Tennessee
  10. Penn State
  11. Arkansas
  12. USC
  13. Florida

Louisiana Prospects Trimming Lists, Making Commitments Soon

LSU in pursuit of state's top players on the market headlined by five-stars Shelton Sampson Jr. and Zalance Heard

The 2023 LSU recruiting class has the chance to grow in a big way over the course of the next few weeks. With a few college announcements lingering, mainly with in-state prospects, the Tigers class can explode.

Headlined by five-star wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. making his announcement in the next few days, we could see this class make a significant jump in the overall rankings.

Here are a few key names to keep an eye on in the month of August:

Shelton Sampson Jr. - August 6th Announcement

Sampson Jr., a top-five wide receiver in the country, has taken visits to LSU, Florida State and Texas A%M recently, with the Tigers heavily in the mix. To secure Sampson Jr. would be a major boost for this recruiting class and a major in-state win.

The Baton Rouge product is right down the road from Death Valley and the Tigers have been pushing for the state’s No. 3 prospect for quite some time. LSU has been recruiting him since Day 1, constantly rooting for him to suit up in the purple and gold.

LSU has all the momentum in this one and would certainly slow down questions regarding Kelly’s ability to recruit in-state. In previous years we have seen the state’s top wideouts go elsewhere, so to keep Sampson Jr. in Baton Rouge would be the cherry on top to an elite 2023 class.

Kylin Jackson - August 8th Announcement

The high four-star safety and Zachary native took a visit to LSU last weekend as he gets a better feel for this 2023 class. Developing a relationship with the coaching staff already, LSU appears to be in the lead with Jackson’s recruitment, but it’ll take time to seal the deal with an announcement coming next week.

A standout from Zachary High School, Jackson is a pure athlete who could provide the Tigers with another versatile player in an already stacked 2023 class. With a myriad of commits on campus last weekend, it gave them the opportunity to talk business with Jackson.

Khai Prean - Announcement TBA

After earning an LSU offer in late March, this program has had their foot on the gas to land one of the state’s most gifted athletes. A versatile, do-it-all player, the addition of Prean would give the Tigers a true speedster.

The 6-foot, 188-pounder has offers from all over the country with Auburn specifically recruiting him just as hard, but LSU appears to be gaining some traction. With Prean utilizing his gifts with the ball in his hands to the highest degree, it could be a huge signing to keep the Louisiana product close to home and suit up for the Tigers.

Zalance Heard - TBA Announcement

Heard has been a name the LSU community is beginning to know very well. With the Tigers in an all out pursuit for the in-state recruit, he’s a prospect who is of the highest priority for head coach Brian Kelly and his staff.

The No. 1 offensive lineman in the state of Louisiana, Heard has received significant buzz to LSU. A former teammate of current LSU offensive lineman Will Campbell, Heard could help this 2023 class significantly.

Already having a relationship with Campbell and a few of the guys on LSU’s roster, not to mention his growing relationship with offensive line coach Brad Davis, Heard appears to be an LSU lean right now. It will take time to seal the deal, but the Tigers are in great position with this one.

In 2000 when LSU got a new HC, the new Coach went to Cincy to get his OC. The OC had been there one year. He had a previous stop with Terry Bowden at Auburn. So he was hired, then it was to fill a roster. Jimbo needing another QB, he called a friend of mine for names, that late in the recruiting cycle, pickings were slim. My friend said go to Glen Oaks High in BTR, see Nolan Gill the Head Coach, look at the Randall kid. The rest is history.

Seventeen players were named to the first or second teams. In addition to these selections, Quarterback Rickie Collins and Head Coach Marcus Randall were recognized with two of the top three awards for the district.

Collins, a junior, was named the District 5-5A Offensive MVP. He completed 119 of 182 passes for 1930 yards. He finished with 16 passing touchdowns and 3 rushing touchdowns to only 3 interceptions.

Coach Randall was named Coach of the Year in District 5-5A. Randall is in his third year as the Head Coach of the Panthers. Coach Randall led Woodlawn to their first District Championship since 2010.

I can't copy the link to this tweet, but it looks good for LSU come Saturday for Shelton Sampson, WR.  This would be very important, 5*, #21 nationally, #4 WR.

I liked the write up on Shelton Sampson the WR, plus all the others.  Thanks LSUDad!  It sounds like August has a chance to be special.  If we got most of the athletes on that list, the class would be almost full.

August looks to be really good, talking with a few friends, the staff has made a great impression on players and their families. Kelly has shown his vision as to what he wants, the direction, the players he wants within his roster. Much of the same with the high school coaches that have talked with Kelly and the staff. This had to be a total rebuild. This class has really looked good. If some remember a coaching change in 2000, that class turned out really well. Some might remember those players.

2000

DB Eric Alexander, Port Arthur, Texas (Austin)
DT Jarvin Armelin, Sulphur, La. (Sulphur)
LB Dorsett Buckels, Amite, La. (Amite)
OL Kade Comeaux, Crowley, La. (Notre Dame)
WR Erin Damond, Bogalusa, La. (Bogalusa)
RB Randall Gay, Brusly, La. (Brusly)
RB Devery Henderson. Opelousas, La. (Opelousas)
DE Chris Henry, Houston, Texas (Jones)
WR Drew Hixon, Kennesaw, Ga. (Harrison)
WR Jack Hunt, Ruston, La. (Ruston)
DB Rudy Johnson, Kentwood, La. (Kentwood)
DT John Paul Jones, Carencro, La. (Carencro)
LB Marvin Jones, Hammond, La. (Hammond)
DE Chad Lavalais, Marksville, La. (Marksville)
OL Daniel Leon, St. Martinville, La. (St. Martinville)
OL Nate Livings, Lake Charles, La. (Wash.-Marion)
WR Donriel Louis, Edgard, La. (West St. John)
DB Adrian Mayes, Houston, Texas (Forest Brook)
DB Travis Moses, Gonzales, La. (East Ascension)
RB Derron Parquet, Metairie, La. (Rummel)
TE Stephen Peterman,Waveland, Miss. (St. Stanislaus)
QB Marcus Randall, Baton Rouge, La. (Glen Oaks)
LB Jarvus Ryes, Loreauville, La. (Loreauville)
LB Lionel Turner,Walker, La. (Walker)
WR Corey Webster, Gramercy, La. (St. James)
DT Brad West, Gurley, Ala. (Madison County)
LB Marcus Yanez, Bastrop, La. (Bastrop)

Two on their Lavalais and Livings, signed in a number of classes, finely making it to LSU, helping to contribute in the next coming years. Randall was the one I told the story about when Jimbo wanted another QB.

From Dandy Don this AM,

"I posted that quarterback Rickie Collins would announce his choice later in the day. What I should have said is that he will be announcing his school of choice this evening (Wednesday  evening) at about 7 p.m. I corrected the mistake by about 7:30 a.m. We still feel good about LSU’s chances with the 4-star quarterback from Woodlawn High."

He just de-committed from Purdue a couple of weeks ago, I'm guessing because LSU said they wanted him.

Just like that, LSU secures their top priority target. The Tigers 2023 class added a commitment from 4-star quarterback Rickie Collins after an all out pursuit for the Baton Rouge native. Collins gives the Tigers a tremendous in-state win for head coach Brian Kelly and this LSU program after he backed off his pledge to Purdue last week.

Collins is commit No. 19 in the 2023 class after the Tigers also welcomed 5-star wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. on Saturday. This is a huge victory for quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan and this LSU staff, who bring in a prospect with a dynamic skill set, adding yet another weapon to this loaded quarterback room.

Collins chose LSU over Florida State and Purdue, among others. The Louisiana product will now join a program who certainly has their fair share of signal-callers, adding a different element to a variety of skill sets.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder has been a high-priority target for the Tigers over the last couple of months, with the Tigers looking to keep him close to home. Collins received significant buzz on social media the last few weeks with this LSU program starting the hashtag trend #RickieReconsidered.

LSU is on an incredible run on the recruitment trail, landing yet another prospect in the 2023 cycle. In search of a few more skill position players for this class, the Tigers fill a position of need with Collins, who gives them a do-it-all gunslinger who fits their scheme beautifully.

Offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock has shown in the past he likes to utilize his quarterbacks mobility, with Collins fitting into his playbook like a glove.

The storm continues within this 2023 class and it’s rapidly coming together with a new pledge seemingly every week. With June and July setting the table for what’s to come, we are seeing Brian Kelly and his staff’s recruiting efforts pay off.

LSU now has 19 spots filled with their focus turning to securing positions of need over the next few months and evaluating the roster. The Tigers have 4-star target Kylin Jackson set to make his college announcement Saturday where LSU feels they are in great position to land the Zachary native.

Per Dandy Don this AM:

"And, barring something unexpected, the Tigers will likely crack the top 5 this weekend when safety Kylin Jackson of Zachary announces his school of choice. By the way, Jackson was at Collins’ announcement ceremony last night, as was recent LSU commit Shelton Sampson of Catholic High."

It's nice that these future Tigers support each other.  The kids from the Baton Rouge area have probably known each other for 10 years.  It was almost a dead giveaway that Ricky Collins would sign with LSU after he attended Shelton Sampson's ceremony.

Edited:  I was a little worried at the end of June when we only had 6 commits, but BK and the staff have come through big time.  The players seem to like the position coaches a lot, have faith in them, and they seem like good recruiters.  Kelly got some good local knowledge with Frank Wilson and Joe Sloan (who came from La. Tech), that had to help him a lot.  It's smart the way Kelly put his staff together.
