2023 LSU Football Commitments

Herb

Recommended Posts

Right now, LSU is ranked 7th on Rivals' recruiting rankings for the 2023 class. Kelly has yet to coach a game for LSU.

Does anyone remember an LSU football coach who had that high of a recruiting prior to their 1st season of being head coach?

I know that technically he already has the 2022 class under his belt, but this is the 1st class that is truly "his". He did a very good job of holding together the 2022 class but he was only hired like 8 weeks prior.

Looking at the rankings (which, admittedly, don't mean jack) Notre Dame is currently ranked #1 but they have 4 more players signed than LSU. There are some big time players that are projected to sign with LSU in the next few weeks. I don't see us winding up with the #1 class but I think we have a realistic shot with ending up with a top 3 class.

ND probably won't finish #1.

Tigers Land Commitment From Coveted Safety Kylin Jackson

LSU's 2023 recruiting class making noise defensively, adds another dynamic safety in the Zachary native.

LSU remains scorching hot on the recruitment trail, landing 4-star safety Kylin Jackson Saturday afternoon. The 2023 Louisiana native gives the Tigers a tremendous in-state win for head coach Brian Kelly as the Bayou Bengals continue their stretch of securing talent close to Death Valley.

Jackson is commit No. 20 in the 2023 class after the Tigers also welcomed 4-star quarterback Rickie Collins earlier this week. This is a huge victory for this LSU staff, bringing in a prospect with a dynamic skill set, adding yet another weapon to a defensive backs group that is rebuilding for the future.
Jackson chose LSU over Texas A&M, Oregon and Michigan, among others. The Top-10 prospect in Louisiana will now join a program who has a revamped secondary via the transfer portal, but is in need of youngsters to take over long term.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder has been a high-priority target for the Tigers over the last couple of months, with the Tigers looking to keep him close to home. Jackson received significant buzz on social media the last few weeks with this LSU program starting the hashtag trend #KeepKylinHome.

For Kelly and his staff to land the Louisiana native is a massive win for this squad as they continue looking to solidify their ties to the state.

LSU is on an incredible run on the recruitment trail, landing yet another prospect in the 2023 cycle. In search of a few more pure athletes for this class, the Tigers fill a position of need with Jackson, who gives them a do-it-all safety who fits their scheme like a glove.

Look for Jackson to do much more than play in the secondary. As versatile as he is, the Tigers could look to use him in a myriad of ways, specifically as a returner. Lethal with the ball in his hands, it’ll be interesting to monitor what this coaching staff will do to maximize his abilities.

As a safety, Jackson plays as a true centerfielder. Playing sideline-to-sideline, the gifted prospect has tremendous ball skills, getting to the ball at its highest point routinely. Though still working in the weight room, Jackson hits with significant power already.

The storm continues within this 2023 class and it’s rapidly coming together with a new pledge seemingly every week. With June and July setting the table for what’s to come, we are seeing Brian Kelly and his staff’s recruiting efforts pay off.

LSU now has 20 spots filled with their focus turning to securing positions of need over the next few months and evaluating the roster. The Tigers have a few more in-state prospects on their radar, specifically 4-star athlete Khai Prean and 5-star offensive lineman Zalance Heard.

Let's Talk About It: How is 'Recruiting the Boot' going for LSU?

For the past few months, there have been many posts on social media and football message boards about how LSU coach Brian Kelly was not doing a great job recruiting the best players from Louisiana. So, we’re going to take a look into how well the Tigers are doing when it comes to ‘Recruiting the Boot’.

Of the top 15 recruits in Louisiana for the class of 2023, LSU currently has five commits (Shelton Sampson Jr., Kaleb Jackson, Kylin Jackson, Rickie Collins and Tyree Adams) and they have  Crystal Ball projections for two more (Zalance Heard and Khai Prean).

If you go back one more spot, LSU could possibly land eight out of the top 16 players in the state — Trey Holly, another LSU commit, is No. 16 on the list.

Sure, Kelly missed out on some of the top prospects like Arch Manning, Derek Williams, Eli Holstein and Tackett Curtis, but this isn’t Pokémon.

You aren’t going to catch them all.

Landing 50% of the top 16 players in the state is a very high clip. It’s also a lot more than anyone else has in your state. Out of the top 16 players, LSU could land eight while Texashas two (Manning and Williams). Alabama (Eli Holstein), USC (Tackett Curtis), Notre Dame(Jaiden Ausberry), Nebraska (Omarion Miller), Tennessee (Jordan Matthews), and Washington (Curley Reed) each have one.

No, it has not been a perfect recruiting cycle, but, in my opinion, it has been pretty successful.

LSU lands St. James WR Khai Prean commitment for dynamic, local weapon.

The energy in

Khai Prean's voice hit as differently as the opportunity he was describing.

"Boy, it's gonna be a different feeling," the highly regarded St. James prospect said in his bayou drawl. "Just knowing the state I was born and raised in, the culture, the people, just being able to represent that and being able to represent my family is something I can't pass up on in my opinion."

The 6-foot, 180-pound athlete, a dynamic three-phase playmaker through his career, announced his commitment to nearby LSU on Tuesday evening from his high school's auditorium about 50 miles southeast, across the Mississippi River in Vacherie.

Prean becomes the 21st pledge of the Tigers' 2023 recruiting class, including four from the 225 area code in the past 11 days and five straight in-state products during the past two and a half weeks.

The four-star, top-150 prospect joins a receiving core with a pair of top-50 prospects on the outside in Shelton Sampson Jr. of Catholic (Baton Rouge) and Jalen Brown of Gulliver Prep (Miami), as well as speedy slot Kyle Parker of Lovejoy (Lucas, Texas).

"That's going to be really exciting knowing that we have weapons coming at pretty much every position really," Prean said of the class. "We're going to be a dangerous offensive team. And especially with all of us in the same class, once we get there on the same page and get our tendencies down, we're gonna be real hard to stop."

More:

He admitted late Monday some nervousness for the ceremony itself, but had long zeroed in on the home-state Tigers as his preferred college destination.

"I just know the decision I'm making is going to best benefit me and my family and all the people that have supported me since Day 1," he told Tiger Details. "I'm just feeling that moment of excitement that all my hard work has paid off."

Prean pointed to deep bonds with the coaching staff as a determining factor in LSU keeping him from leaving for Auburn, Mississippi State or Florida State.

He's known recruiting specialist Jordan Arcement, a Thibodaux native and E.D. White and Nicholls State alumnus, long before either was in their current circumstances.

And first-year wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton, a New Orleans native, had previously started recruiting Prean during his tenure at Georgia before himself returning home.

"I was starting to get in touch and build a relationship with him," Prean said. "And then it turned out he was coming closer to my home, and we were able to start picking up right where we left off in the recruitment."

And other key relationships with associate head coach Frank Wilson III and offensive analyst Carter Sheridan, two more New Orleans natives, and the rest of the staff consistently helped the young athlete and his family feel confident in the decision.

"It had to be the relationships," Prean said regarding priorities in his process. "Building a relationship with a coach knowing that you can go to them about anything and that coach is gonna have your back through it all, that means a lot. That's something that goes a long way beyond football.

"And then him meeting your parents and being able to establish that relationship with your parents and them knowing, 'I've got your son's back. He can always come to me if he needs anything. And I'll just be in his corner to support him.' That just says a lot to a parent and a kid in my opinion."

Prean said he felt that love and support from the coaches "calling everyday just checking up on me and making sure that I'm working hard and telling me how they believed in me."

He was also consistently amazed at the attention from fans on Twitter "all supporting me and looking forward to me doing what I've got to do to get on the field and be successful."

And the recruitment in recent weeks by current players and previous commitments resonated strongly.

"I would say real close touch with (Woodlawn quarterback) Rickie (Collins)," Prean said. "Even when he was committed to Purdue and Purdue had offered me, he was the main guy that was trying to get me up there and stuff like that. So once he decommitted, he was updating me and texting me and telling me what was going on, I kind of knew that it was special for him to want me to be involved.

"And the other day Jalen Brown texted me and was asking me how I feel and if I wanted to be on board, and I was like, 'Of course.' And when I told him that, he said, 'Well, me, you, Shelton, Rickie and the rest of the 'em, let's get this national championship.' And I said, 'Let's do it.'"

Brian Kelly has had a direct hand in two universities having top 10 recruiting classes this cycle. I have to assume that some of the kids committing to Notre Dame are players Kelly was wooing to go there for the past couple of years.

Marcus Freeman and his staff get credit for 'closing the deal' on the commitments for Notre Dame's current class, but I can't help thinking that Kelly also deserves some of the credit.

After getting hired to be LSU’s new football head coach in late November last year, one of the first tasks for Brian Kelly and his new staff had to get their arms around was getting their recruiting rolling. Despite being located in Baton Rouge, in close proximity of oodles of talented high school players both in Louisiana and nearby states, Kelly knew it wasn’t going to be an immediate bonanza.

But after a slow start through the first few months of 2022, when Kelly was mostly getting his staff finalized and those coaches then got out on the trail, things picked up. Since July began, LSU has been on a recruiting heater, reeling in 15 commitments, including 11 four-star recruits in On3’s Consensus player rankings for the class of 2023.

“Yeah, you know, we really didn’t get the opportunity to develop the strong relationships until the February, March recruiting period,” Kelly said. “So we had to make up for lost time. Putting a staff together in January and February and you have a very short period of time to build those relationships. So I just think this is the continuation of those relationships starting to form and I think we did a really good job. You know, JR Belton did a great job, and his staff, of putting together visits in June, which allowed us to really sink those relationships deeper, and I think we’re starting to see that work come out.”

Kelly's performance to date appears very strong to me.  The team lacked depth, O's staff could not keep recruiting after his firing was announced, so the high school class was thin.  At least Kelly kept those kids committed.  It sounds like they did well pulling players out of the transfer portal but that remains to be seen.  I guess the little lag in getting 2023 recruiting going by June was understandable, but they have caught up in July and August.  The 2023 class looks to be in good shape.  I read that LSU could take up to 32 in the class, but they will probably stop at 28 and see if there are any high priorities in the transfer portal.

I would say Kelly has hit on all 8 cylinders.  I don't see how he could have done better.  I give him an A+ so far.  Now if he can just win some football games.  He appears to be a hell of an administrator!

5-Star OL Zalance Heard Locks in Commitment Time

The LSU target could be the cherry on top to a loaded 2023 class, Tigers heavily pursuing.

The top uncommitted prospect in Louisiana is set to make his college commitment Thursday. 5-star offensive lineman Zalance Heard has locked in his announcement time for 4:00 PM on the Neville Tiger Network, according to Rivals Julie Boudwin.

The gifted offensive lineman will be choosing from a final five schools consisting of LSU, Nebraska, Florida, Houston and Florida State. The Tigers have made a significant push for the Monroe native, looking to keep the in-state prospect close to home.

It’s September 1st which means LSU can begin contacting the 2024 class. Once the clock struck 12:00am, the Tigers’ recruiting staff immediately went to work, making calls to recruits from Tiger Stadium.

Social media was buzzing late Wednesday night with FaceTime calls, posts and more coming from Death Valley with this program going deep into their bag of tricks. LSU’s 2024 class is already a Top-5 class, but we fully expect this program to mimic their 2023 success into next year as well.

Here’s a look at the Tigers 2024 class thus far:

Maurice Williams - Safety/Linebacker

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder developed a strong relationship with defensive coordinator Matt House and defensive backs coaches Kerry Cooks and Robert Steeples. A four-star, top 100 prospect, his recruitment has exploded this spring.

Williams was on campus for an unofficial visit with the Tigers this summer where he ultimately felt at home. Ready to commit this summer and shut the process down was on his mind for quite some time, leading him to pledge to Brian Kelly and his staff.

A polished, versatile safety when in coverage, the Tigers are getting a prospect who has the instincts to make an immediate impact for the program when his number is called. Elite footwork paired with physical traits, Williams has the chance to be up next and continue the “DBU” tradition in Baton Rouge.

Tayvion Galloway - Tight End

The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder has all the tools to compete in the SEC with the developmental skills this coaching staff attains. Kelly has been working to develop relationships early in the 2024 cycle, clearly making an impression on Galloway over a short period of time.

Galloway has proven to be a threat as a blocking tight end and has shown flashes of his soft hands when becoming a pass catcher. Only entering his junior year, he has all the tools to develop into a lethal threat for this LSU offense when his time comes.

An official visit to Death Valley in March set the tone for Galloway. Developing a better relationship with this LSU staff is what led him to commit to the Tigers.

Joseph Stone - Athlete

Standing at 5-foot-11, 180-pounds, Stone is about as versatile of an athlete this coaching staff could ask for. Reeling in 37 offers according to Rivals, Stone has been a hot name on the market with LSU coming in and taking the Georgia native.

LSU is beginning to form a pipeline from Loganville, Ga. to Baton Rouge with 2023 four-star safety Michael Daugherty committing to the Tigers this offseason as well. Daugherty also plays with Stone at Grayson High School, one of the top football programs in the country.

Stone has been in Baton Rouge three times unofficially this year, developing a relationship with the new staff and getting familiar with this new era of LSU football. Being recruited as an athlete gives the Tigers hope that he can be a do-it-all player on this deep roster they’re developing.

Xavier Atkins - Linebacker

At 6-foot, 200-pounds, Atkins has great size for the linebacker position given he is about to enter his junior year of high school. With tremendous strength and technique, it’ll be interesting to monitor his growth as he continues developing before heading to Baton Rouge in 2024.

Totaling 218 tackles – 28.0 for loss – and eight sacks in 13 games as a sophomore, Atkins proved he has all the intangibles to compete in the SEC.

BOOM!!!

Lance Heard was the last top 10 in La. recruit to give his verbal, only 4 committed to LSU.  We got 4 more commits out of the next 7 recruits (#11 - #17).

That's the worst LSU has done in the state in a long time, but when you fire you head coach mid season last year, it is not a complete surprise.

Hopefully with time to build relationships, the 2024 class will be better for La. recruits.

Heard was a top priority, #6 OT in the nation, and a great pickup for the Tigers.
