LSU Loses Commitment From 4-Star DL Darron Reed

Reed, a big piece to the Tigers' 2023 recruiting class, flips his commitment from LSU to Auburn.

That one really hurts.  We did not have depth on the d-line this year, and we lose Ojalari and Gaye.  We need a lot of help on the d-line, and this is moving in the wrong direction.

This is far from over. I wouldn’t worry about this one.

That happened around Thanksgiving. We lost 2 four star DL commits that week.

I agree with @LSUDad, this is far from over and there are a few former 4 and 5 star DL that have entered the portal (like Tunmise Adeleye). There are also a lot of high ranking recruits that committed to teams like Cincinnati where the coach has moved on and the kids are re-opening their recruiting.

It'll be a fun few weeks.

LOOK: Brian Kelly, LSU Coaches Hit The Road to Visit Commits

Kelly and his staff continue making key push before Early Signing Day, include surprise visit.

Brian Kelly and his staff went coast-to-coast this week holding in-home visits with their 2023 commits. As they continue putting the final touches on this class ahead of Early Signing Day in less than two weeks, Kelly has his foot on the gas for a number of prospects.

One visit that stood out most was offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock’s trip up to Ohio. With this staff holding meetings with commitments, Denbrock decided to stop in to talk with 2023 tight end target Jackson McGohan.

Here’s the latest on the in-home visits and the status of McGohan:

Rickie Collins - Quarterback

The LSU football program landed a good one when 4-star quarterback Rickie Collins committed to the Tigers in August. Collins gave the Tigers a tremendous in-state win for head coach Brian Kelly after he backed off of his pledge to Purdue.

As Early Signing Day approaches, this coaching staff has their foot on the gas for a number of LSU commits as they hit the road for in-home visits. For Collins, this staff didn’t have to go very far when quarterbacks Coach Joe Sloan went to Collins’ house for his in-home visit.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder had been a high-priority target for the Tigers over the last couple of months, with the Tigers looking to keep him close to home. Collins received significant buzz on social media with this LSU program starting the hashtag trend #RickieReconsidered.

Kaleb Jackson - Running Back

Baton Rouge native and four-star running back Kaleb Jackson gave LSU coach Brian Kelly a massive commitment at a position of need in July.

Fast forward to December and the Tigers continue to push for the elite back as Early Signing Day approaches. Coach Kelly and running backs coach Frank Wilson went with an in-home visit on Monday with Jackson.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound prospect is a top recruit in Louisiana and a top 10 running back in the class of 2023. For Kelly and his staff to keep the Baton Rouge native home is a massive win for this program as they continue trying to reel in the state’s top talent.

Kyle Parker - Wide Receiver

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound speedster chose LSU over Texas, Louisville and Oklahoma State, among others. Parker officially visited all four schools this summer with his desired commitment date coming before his senior season.

With family in the New Orleans area, this helped the Tigers significantly in the recruitment process, wanting to be closer to them and giving a chance for his family to attend home games at LSU.

Throughout his high school career, Parker has shown his versatility on the football field. The ability to make something out of nothing on a screen pass or go up and become a deep-ball threat is what intrigued the Tigers. Parker’s physicality is a piece of his game that will go a long way at the collegiate level.

Jalen Brown - Wide Receiver

LSU added a lethal weapon to their 2023 class after the commitment of Miami native Jalen Brown in early July. The coveted wide receiver became one of the hottest names on the market this summer, ultimately selecting the Tigers over Miami and Michigan, among others.

“There were a lot of things, a lot of different coaches, but I felt like for me it was pretty much the culture,” Brown said of his decision. “Pretty much the environment that they’re building at LSU.”

LSU reeled in one of the nation’s top vertical threats in Brown, who is next in line to carry on the tradition of elite wide receivers to roll through Death Valley. The Miami native is prepared to bring his energy and swagger to Baton Rouge where he’ll be accompanied by an elite-level 2023 class.

Jackson McGohan - Tight End - 2023 Target

Less than a week after receiving an offer from LSU, Miamisburg (Ohio) tight end Jackson McGohan‍ decommitted from Cincinnati and opened up his recruiting process.

McGohan has a solid relationship with LSU offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock. The two formed a bond when Denbrock was at Cincinnati, carrying it over when he ultimately took the job with LSU.

Denbrock took the trip up to Ohio to meet with McGohan earlier this week before his visit to Baton Rouge. With things heating up ahead of Early Signing Day, it could be trending positively for the Tigers.

BREAKING: TE Jackson McGohan commits to LSU

LSU received a Tuesday commitment from Miamisburg (Ohio) tight end Jackson McGohan.

A one-time Cincinnati verbal, McGohan opened up his recruitment following the departure of head coach Luke Fickell. LSU offered in late November. He had an existing relationship with offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock. Denbrock then came to Ohio to see him in advance of his official.

The strength of their relationship played a big role in this commitment.

"Coach Denbrock and I have developed a very good relationship since before he was even at LSU, he recruited me and I trust him and he trusts me," he said.

McGohan is excited for the plan for how Denbrock and the Tigers plan to us his receiving skills.

"They plan to use me as a hybrid tight end who will catch the ball mainly and they are going to be able to expand the offense based off my playing style," he said.

McGohan goes 6-foot-4, 225 pounds with excellent ball skills.

He is now the 24th commitment in LSU's 2023 class which ranks No. 6 in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings.

He joins Mac Markway as the two tight ends in the class.

McGohan is the lone class member from the state of Ohio but the Tigers also have Tayvion Galloway, an Ohio-based tight end, committed in the 2024 class.

247Sports rates McGohan an 89 and ranks him the No. 25 tight end in this class and No. 16 senior in the state of Ohio.

He had 47 receptions for 699 yards and ten touchdowns as a junior. He followed that up with 52 receptions for 941 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.

247Sports Scouting Report:
Had a good junior year then stepped it up more as a senior. Has top notch ball skills with the ability to win 50-50 balls and make acrobatic, tough grabs with regularity. Catches the ball away from his body naturally. Smooth route runner. Runs hard after the catch and will break tackles. Right now, he has solid, above average straight line speed but that and initial explosiveness can still be improved as he gets into college. Has been a hybrid tight end-receiver in college. Question will be how he best projects long term. He shows good blocking ability from a split position. Will he add the weight and blocking skills to play on the line more or is he going to always be a move guy who can play outside or in the slot? Regardless, his pass-catching skills are too good for him to not project as a productive college player. He will have a chance to play beyond college depending on his continued physical development.

One of the biggest needs of the LSU football program is more talent at the tight end position.  On Tuesday, that position just got stronger with the commitment of Jackson McGohan‍ of Miamisburg, Ohio.

McGohan stands at 6-foot-4, 230-pounds and he chose LSU over Michigan, Cinncinati and many others.  He visited LSU officially last weekend after decommitting from the Bearcats.

With his pledge, LSU now has 24 commitments for the class of 2023.  LSU offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Matt Denbrock is recruiting McGohan for the Tigers staff.

McGohan is LSU’s second tight end for the class of 2023.  He joins Mac Markway‍ of St. Louis (MO) DeSmet.

McGohan finished his senior with with 941 yards on 52 receptions and 12 touchdowns.  As a junior, he totaled 699 yards on 47 receptions with 10 touchdowns.

LSU is still looking at another TE in the portal, Kyle Morlock. Along with other high school guys. They like a number of TE’s within set formation’s.
In the timeframe of Kelly being at ND, he has had 8 TE’s drafted into the NFL. LSU during that timeframe, two, Foster Moreau being the only true TE. The other, if you want to call him a TE, Stephen Sullivan.

Brian Kelly’s Recruiting Message:

“We are going to develop based upon our freshman class, too” Kelly said. “So we are doing this at the same time, and also allowing our program to be younger, too. We want to bring both of these along. We don’t always want to be a turn-it-over program where we are bringing in transfers and turning the program over.

“So we need to grow and you’ve got to do that by recruiting freshmen and giving them the opportunity to step on the field and develop. And you can’t do that if you keep bringing in freshmen at one position and then bringing a portal guy who has got one year and putting it in front of him.”

There is a lot in that statement by Kelly if you think about it.  Next year he will be willing to give up experience, and probably a win or two, because he will play freshmen and sophomores.  He wants to develop his players and not have to go to the portal every year, bring in experience, but lose the guy the next year, which is what happened this year.  He had to do it in 2022 because the roster was in an emergency depletion.  But he wants to transition away from the portal, and to make that transition, he'll have to gut it out and go with more youth for a year to develop the experience.  I think its a smart move to adopt a long term strategy.  He'll make use of the portal where necessary, but it will be a limited use.  Kelly still looks like a smart guy to me.

This class of 2023 signees will be the first where BK had the full year on the job.  It looks like a good class.  But, it was his first time meeting the high school coaches in La. and around.  He said some things, and they will judge whether they like him, and more important, do they trust him.  The high school coaches talk to the kids every day, and if they trust BK, things could get a little better IMO.

A lot of kids had their minds made up before BK beat Gumps.  After that game, BK has to have some more credibility with the kids.  He can hang with Sabini.

I see BK having a better time recruiting next year than he had his first year at LSU, when he was the new kid on the block.

And he won't be playing on the 40 Acres.

On Thursday, Toviano made his commitment official, pledging to Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers, and bolstering their surging 2023 class.

Toviano had made multiple trips to Austin and had the Longhorns as a finalist, but ultimately Texas lost him to the out-of-state Tigers.

I saw a youtube of Toviano in the stands right after Mason Taylor caught the 2 pt. conversion for the win against Gumps.  What a moment!  If that didn't sell you on playing in Tiger Stadium, maybe you are missing a pulse!  He charged the field, was super excited.  He wanted to be here after that, maybe before that.

"Brian Kelly has landed his first big fish out of the NCAA Transfer Portal. Sunday evening, former 5-star wide receiver Aaron Anderson announced his commitment to LSU, giving this receiving corps another lethal weapon for the foreseeable future.

The Alabama transfer did not record any stats in his freshman campaign with the Menstrual Wave after suffering an injury early in the season.

A former Edna Karr standout, Anderson was rated as a Top-50 prospect in the 2022 class. A Top-5 wide receiver in the country, the Louisiana legend took the nation by storm in his senior season.

  • 3 weeks later...
  • 2 weeks later...

The second national signing day is two weeks out, Wed. February 1.

Man, things are QUIET.  Most kids signed on the first signing day, so not that many uncommitted out there, especially high quality kids.

Would be nice to pick up a LB that can contribute in a year or two.  Maybe another CB.

Any other desires or needs?

Anybody hear of kids were are on?
