Marcel Brooks, Siaki Ika move up in 247Sports Composite

ByBILLY EMBODY 19 hours ago

It's nearing the end of the 2019 recruiting cycle with National Signing Day just weeks away. The ranking services are making their final updates to rankings with all-star games all but in the rear-view mirror. The industry-generated 247Sports Composite saw its update come through after other services dropped new rankings.

With that, 2019 Flower Mound (Tex.) Marcus outside linebacker and LSU signee Marcel Brooks earned his fifth star on the 247Sports Composite, jumping up from No. 44 to No. 28 overall and is now the consensus No. 2 outside linebacker nationally. 247Sports already rated Brooks in five-star territory at No. 23 overall ahead of the update.

LSU signee and four-star defensive tackle Siaki Ika saw a bit of a jump, going from No. 159 to No. 134 overall, after his impressive performance in the All-American Bowl.

Baton Rouge (La.) Southern Lab offensive guard Kardell Thomas dropped a few spots from No. 32 to No. 37 overall, dropping to a four-star prospect. His teammate and LSU running back signee Tyrion Davis slid up a spot from No. 142 to No. 141 overall and is the No. 8 overall running back nationally.

Memphis (Tenn.) University School defensive back and LSU commit Maurice Hampton dropped from No. 63 to No. 125 overall and to the No. 13 overall cornerback in the country. The two-sport star is in Baton Rouge this weekend for a visit with the baseball team and is also considered a top flight MLB Draft prospect.

On the uncommitted prospect front, Amite (La.) defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsherdropped from No. 9 overall in the country to No. 32, just on the edge of five-star territory. When speaking with 247Sports at the Polynesian Bowl, Sopsher said Alabama, LSU and Ole Piss are expected to receive the final visits.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball is shifting to Alabama for the No. 3 defensive tackle nationally while in-state LSU holds an edge overall still.

Sopsher's teammate and four-star athlete Devonta Lee slid down from No. 130 to No. 164 overall. The 247Sports Crystal Ball has LSU with the 95 percent edge over Alabama to land Lee on Feb. 6.

A trio of Mississippi defensive linemen, all with LSU interest, made moves as well with Nathan Pickering moving from No. 65 to No. 59 overall, Charles Moorejumping from No. 105 to No. 71 and Byron Young moving from No. 88 overall to No. 82. LSU is hosting Pickering for an official visit weekend while Moore and Young are tripping to Baton Rouge for the final weekend before National Signing Day to get a look at campus.

Alabama defensive back commit Christian Williamsdropped from No. 115 to No. 133 overall. LSU is expected to host Williams for an official visit on the final weekend of the contact period.

Stick with 247Sports for our final ranking updates, due out next week, which will again shift the 247Sports Composite.

Call me a defeatist.

Or just defeated. I got tired of the Surtain type BS a long time ago. If he wanted to be a tiger, imo, he'd be a tiger already.

I share the overall sentiment, but I have to temper it with the fact that the whole recruiting system has become a grand pageant for some, unfortunately.  I e drama for ratings/ad revenue.think the networks encourage and reward th

From Dandy Don this morning:

As far as I know, LSU decided not to host any official visitors this weekend, instead opting to bring in as many as possible next weekend and get the final word with them before the dead period kicks in. Below are the 2019 prospects I’m hearing will be in next weekend, though I wouldn’t be surprised to learn of another one or two to add to the list.

DE/OLB Soni Fanua
S/WR Devonta Lee
DL Charles Moore (Miss State commit)
TE Garmon Randolph
DL Ishmael Sopsher
DL Byron Young (Alabama commit)
DB Christian Williams (Alabama commit)

I hear there’s a possibility of safety Brendan Gant (FSU commit) visiting as well.

I have not heard of Soni Fanua, that is a new one to me.  He's at Mesa CC, has interest  from Kansas, Nebraska and Ok. State.

This is kind of a bitter / sweet day. I made every Bayou Recruiting Bash. Back when it started, Gerry Dinardo, on campus, in the field house. During that time, the Girls Gymnastics used the field house for training. So some folks would turn into Gymnastics fans, along with Football fans.

Ive seen it start there, move to Catfish Town Atrium, Centroplex, and Casino. Tom Breaux, Chico Moore, Ed Fisher and the rest have done a great job. Many schools sent representatives down to watch what we were doing. None could duplicate it. Some of the best food anywhere. Drink and eat all day.

Then sitting there waiting on the fax machine at LSU receiving a fax, them relaying to the Bash folks.

I remember a coach I know from Miss St, sending info on a player we were recruiting. Giving us inside info, on where he was going to sign.

I remember getting calls from a coach, asking what Mark Roman , was going to do. Remember, he signed days later.

The big DL from Bogalusa also waited days before signing.

All in all, this was a one day hit. Now, you get a early day. Get most of the guys, the second day, allows you a chance to regroup, aim on positions of need. If someone doesn’t sign early, most times, you might want to move on, or at least, line yourself up for another player.

As a staff, you get yourself ready for both, getting the kid, or not getting him.

Transfer Sr’s, Junior College guys, awarding scholarships to walk ons.

Not Sopsher

My gut is telling me you are correct on this one.  It seems to me that when a kid is leaning to LSU, the LSU people usually know it.  On the other hand, when the LSU people have no idea where a kid is going, he is not going to LSU.  You can go back to Joe McKnight or Landon Collins, or other of the 5* talent that LSU has not been able to corral.  Maybe he goes to LSU, but right now it does not look that way to me.

LSU got commitments from 9 of the top 10 kids in the state, if we miss on Sopsher, and if Ray Parker does not make it into the class it is not on LSU apparently.  Parker had the chance to sign in Dec. and he chose not sign.  Now there may not be room and grades may be an issue.

But, I look forward to Wed. to see how this class finishes.

LSU people seem confident we get signature from Sopsher's teammate, Devonta Lee, and that would be very good.  Consensus seems to be we need to sign 2 more D-line candidates.

Couple of things...

If you wanna know if the kid is going to InbredGumps or LSU, follow Bamaonline.  Somehow their insiders are more inside on LSU recruits than LSU insiders are.  Right now, they're saying Ish is either theirs or ours.

Regarding Parker, he did NOT have a chance to sign in December, trust me.  He will sign nowhere Wednesday.  He is not going to count in this class or anyone else's.

Right now we're at 22 including Hampton, Parker, and Soni.  Of those, we'll sign Hampton and Soni and pray Hampton doesn't get drafted TOO high by MLB.

So that gets us to 21 with Parker out.

We have room for four more.

Ish, Lee, and Christian Williams (NOT in that order) are the most likely, then there's others such as the tight end who's name I can't recall, Charles Moore who BLEW his visit this weekend but now is contacting the coaches wanting in and is too good a prospect at a position of desperate need to pass up, most likely, and others we probably hardly know of.

Lee is pretty much a done deal, but never say never of course.

Williams is LSU's to lose, but allegedly is contacting the LSU staff saying he's now torn between us and Miami.  Well, all I can say is, at least he's reaching out to us with this instead of letting us know at 3 am Wednesday morning, right?  Gotta be able to out-recruit Manny Diaz.  This is friggin' DBU, Christian!!

Ish, I'll tell ya, NO WAY I'm coming out and saying I think we get him.  Been there, done that, earned the moniker.  No more.  Until ink hits paper I'll just assume he's a gump.

I see us finishing with  MAYBE 24, and leave a spot open for a transfer.

ETA: Garmon Randolph is the TE who's name I forgot...

LSU received a commitment Tuesday from Josh Williams, a running back from The Kinkaid School in Houston.

Williams, who'll be a preferred on walk-on, announced his commitment on Twitter.

The two-star prospect according to 247 Sports holds scholarship offers from schools such as Dayton, Drake and Stetson. None of his offers are from FBS schools, though Houston and Rice showed interest, according to 247 Sports.

Preferred walk-ons are typically guaranteed a roster spot and might earn a scholarship after their first season with a team.

National signing day is Wednesday. The Tigers signed 19 players in the early period and can ink six more beginning Wednesday.

His measurables and strength look good.  Without knowing too much, I like this one better than the little running back.  Tayte looks like he could be a real player.

H-back?

It's the final countdown. Here's who is at stake.

Lee

Hampton

Fonua

Randolph

Sopsher

Moore

Ward

The first I'll say are very likely.

After that, crap shoot

I like the class thus far, but not getting any additional DL or OL is trouble. It's as bad or worse than the lack of CBs in last year's class.

Well?

Ika was a great get. But in a year we desperately need DL, this class is a letdown.

I get so sick of seeing people say Miles left the trenches in shambles. It's the biggest didley-poo people spew in defense of O.

Alabama just signed 7 or 8 DL!! We get screwed again. It sucks because overall and on paper, this is a good class. That said, O himself said we gotta get better in the trenches. People claim this is Os "bread and butter". Yet here we are...O's bread is without butter again.

Last season we desperately needed CBs, and he flopped there.

Saban gets what he needs, then he takes what he knows LSU needs. He ain't stupid and O and LSU need to learn chess because Saban is playing in 4d.

To your point, I'm a realist and there's nothing to counter that.

But go ahead and call me negative. It's ridiculous because if that were the case, I wouldn't bleed P&G, go WAY out of my way to support the Tigers from 500 miles away attending games, bowl games, basketball and baseball games, and try to generate discussion here. I despise the term nega being applied to people using facts with data to back them up. But it is what it is.
