Who are the 5 we have? I  know of Welch, Goodwin and Bradford.  Who are the other two?

They list them all:

Tavion Faulk

QB

5-11 180

George Hamsley

QB

6-4 200

The full roster from the aTm game has Hamsley but not Faulk.

'I'm still trying to take it all in': Jayden Daniels on being named a Heisman finalist

Upon the transfer portal opening on Monday, over 1,000 names flooded the market.

In the case of LSU, the Tigers have avoided bad news thus far and are yet to lose a significant contributor from the 2023 roster.

As of Friday morning, six Tigers entered the portal.

The running back depth takes a hit with Goodwin and Bradford out, but Goodwin didn’t see the field in 2023 as he continued to deal with injuries. Bradford made a big play to start the year with a catch and run against Florida State, but after that, he fell on the RB depth chart.

LSU’s losing a combined 22 snaps between its three offensive transfers in the portal.

As for the defense, the losses are slightly more significant. Welch is a former four-star recruit who saw a good bit of time in LSU’s thinned-out secondary. However, LSU opted to play true freshmen in place of Welch down the stretch, so his portal entry comes as no surprise.

Up front, LSU loses Wiggins and Langston. The two combined for 19 snaps this year, but could have had a shot at more time next year.

But they fit the profile of names you’d expect to hit the portal in this era.

You never want to see roster attrition, but to this point, LSU’s core is holding strong. We’re seeing schools across the country lose significant contributors. If you can hold on to those guys, it’s a win. LSU’s doing something right in that regard.

Why are we losing a 4* DL player?  We need them

You need them, just not him. He and the others that are leaving, before the bowl game, early exits. Been here two years. Kelly making room for incoming. Let Wiggins get an early start on finding a home. Best of luck to him. Much of the same with Langston.

@dachsie, what we don't know is what the work ethic, practice habits, and academic attention that any highly rated recruit that 'decides to leave' LSU has shown.

Wiggins, Welch, and others were highly rated prospects when they signed with LSU. For whatever reason, they did not crack the starting lineup while others in their incoming classes did.

On a team like LSU, some players that are 2nd and 3rd string would be starters elsewhere. At LSU, those players might need to have the work ethic of a Jacob Hester to earn a starting job.

To put it another way...Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Herb were all 4 star guitar prospects when were each 12 years old. Guess which one out of the three didn't put in the devotion and practice?

Herb is right, it might be about work ethic.  When Bear Bryant got to A&M and took them to Junction, a lot of the players quit the team.  That team ended with few players left and had a poor season (1-9).  But he assembled his kind of players and won the Southwest Conf. in 1956.  Kelly talks about doing the right thing, and doing it the right way.

Another thing, with Laterrance Welch.  He was recruited by O, who was fired mid season.  He was a 4*, signed with Kelly in Dec. 2021 (I don't think he signed any more recruits on the Feb. 2022 signing date).  But recruiting is not a science.  Some 5* are really 4*, some 4* are 5* or maybe 3*.  Kelly didn't evaluate Welch and sign him, he had to take what O had gotten commitments from and go from there.

I think this roster is still in transition.  Kelly has only signed one class (2023) that his staff evaluated and signed.

When Kelly and Denbrock arrived, they said they wanted a dual threat QB, and in came JD.  He beat everyone out for the job.  I thought Myles Brennan was a better passer, based on very little film from practice, but JD was clearly a far superior runner.

Now it is Nuss's time, but we have not seen him be a dual threat QB, but we have seen him throw some nifty balls.

I wonder what they are going to do with Nuss.  Are the so in favor of a dual threat QB that they will go get a dual threat QB?  Is Nuss more of a running threat than we know?  If they bring in a dual threat QB and he won the job in the spring, does Nuss enter the portal (of course he would).

What do you think of our QB situation?

Marshall QB Cam Fancher is coming for a visit:

Quote

According to 247Sports’ Clint Brewster, LSU will host Marshall transfer Cam Fancher this week, as will the Wolfpack, ironically.

In three years with the Thundering Herd, Fancher appeared in 25 games. He’s been a starter the last two seasons, though he battled injuries this fall and threw as many touchdowns (11) as interceptions. In three seasons in Huntington, West Virginia, he threw for 3,766 yards, 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions while completing 61% of his passes.

A dual-threat quarterback, he also added 757 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

EDIT: P S He's from Ohio.

Transfer Portal Targets: The LSU Cornerback Big Board 2.0

Tigers reach out to one of the top cornerbacks in the portal, making moves behind the scenes,

The LSU football staff added four cornerbacks via the NCAA Transfer Portal last offseason and once again find themselves in need of defensive backs ahead of next year.

Now, with "free agency" in full swing, targets are emerging for this program with the first window officially open.

Last offseason, the Tigers went out and added 15+ players through the Transfer Portal with four of them being at the cornerback position.

The hit rate was slim. Southeastern's Zy Alexander earned a starting role for the Tigers while former Ohio State corner JK Johnson's season ended before it started after suffering a lower-body injury.

The other pair of cornerbacks, Syracuse's Duce Chestnut and Texas A&M's Denver Harris, suited up in less than half of LSU's games after being unavailable for most of the year.

Now, Brian Kelly has his work cut out for him once again in the portal as he looks for immediate impact players.

Kelly addressed last year's struggles on defense:

"We weren't a close-knit group. They hadn't played together. We saw how they played earlier in the season and how they played later in the season. It's a red flag when you have to do that. We don't believe we have to do that. Will we have to take a player here or there at a position? Most likely.

"We are much more targeted and much more focused. It's much more (focused). We were taking literally numbers on defense to right the ship relative to our defensive structure last year. We won't have to do that. We are counting 10 of 11 players with the most snaps coming back next year. Some might say that's not such a great thing. We think it is, because we have experience."

A look into three defensive backs the Tigers are targeting as the NCAA Transfer Portal window opens:

Jyaire Brown: Ohio State

Brown, a Louisiana native, entered the Transfer Portal with three years of eligibility remaining. The former four-star cornerback has received interest from several SEC programs with the Tigers certainly getting in the mix as well.

An official LSU offer hasn't been reported yet by Brown, but Kelly has harped on the importance of pursuing Louisiana natives in the portal with multiple years of eligibility.

For Brown, he checks both boxes. During his two seasons with Ohio State, he totaled nine tackles and three defended passes with the chance to take that next step with more playing time. Look for the former Top 250 prospect to become a hot commodity in the market with LSU entering the mix.

Decamerion Richardson: Mississippi State

Brian Kelly and the Tigers have shown their desire to reach out to Louisiana players in the Transfer Portal. On Wednesday, another Bayou State native entered the free agent market in Decamerion Richardson.

The Bossier City, Louisiana product spent four seasons in Starkville and will exercise his COVID year for the final season of eligibility.

LSU has already reached out to the Mississippi State native and the Tigers will certainly be a program in the mix for his services.

Richardson appeared in 45 games at Mississippi State, making 26 starts as one of the SEC West’s top cornerbacks. He tallied 177 tackles through four seasons with a sack, two tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and 10 passes broken up.

Jardin Gilbert: Texas A&M

Former Texas A&M safety Jardin Gilbert is at the top of LSU's list and could be the first Transfer Portal prospect to pop for the Tigers. The Louisiana native officially entered the portal on Tuesday and the Bayou Bengals will begin getting to work.

Gilbert played his high school ball at University High, which is located on LSU's campus. A former four-star recruit, the coveted portal prospect spent three years at Texas A&M with several potential suitors reaching out.

Safety is clearly a position of need for Kelly's program with several players being targeted in the portal. With a lack of depth and experience, the Transfer Portal will be used to the Tigers' advantage.

Look for LSU to push for Gilbert over the next few days. A player that could reveal a decision sooner rather than later, the Tigers are heavily in the mix for his services.

BREAKING: Zavion Thomas commits to LSU

By Mike Scarborough
December 15, 2023

Brian Kelly and his LSU football staff has added another key piece to their roster as former John Ehret star and Mississippi State transfer portal entry Zavion Thomas has announced his commitment to the Tigers.

Last season the 5-foot-11, 190 pound wide receiver totaled 503 yards on 40 receptions.   He’s also a fantastic return man, which is something sorely needed at LSU.

He announced his commitment to LSU via his Twitter account.

This past season, against Texas A&M he returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown.

He averaged 11.6 yards per punt return.
